Introduction
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your WebHostingM account. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up 2FA using a mobile authenticator app.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have one of the following authenticator apps installed on your mobile device:
- Google Authenticator (iOS)
- Google Authenticator (Android)
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Authy
- Duo Mobile
- 1Password
Step-by-Step Setup Process
- Log in to your WebHostingM account at https://mydashboard.webhostingm.com/clientarea.php
- From your account drop-down, select the "Manage Security" option. This will take you to https://mydashboard.webhostingm.com/user/security
- Select the "Two-Factor Authentication"
- Select "Enable Here" to start the configuration
- Scan the displayed QR code with your mobile device's camera using your chosen authenticator app
- Enter the 6-digit code shown in your authenticator app to confirm the setup
Backup Codes: Importance and Storage
After completing the 2FA setup, you'll receive a backup code. This code is crucial for account recovery if you lose access to your authenticator device.
Best practices for storing backup codes:
- Write it down and store it in a secure location
- Save it in your password manager as a password field (not plain text)
- Consider using a dedicated USB flash drive for storing backup codes
Avoid storing backup codes in:
- Cloud storage
- Your computer's hard drive
- Frequently used removable storage
- Password managers as plain text
Switching Devices: What You Need to Know
If your authenticator app doesn't support syncing or exporting, follow these steps when switching to a new phone:
- Remove 2FA from your WebHostingM account settings
- Generate a new QR code
- Scan the new QR code with your new device
- This process will invalidate codes on the old device
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Incorrect Verification Code
If you receive an "Incorrect verification code" error:
- Verify that your device's clock is accurate (check against time.gov)
- Ensure you're using the correct code for the right WebHostingM account
- When updating 2FA settings, always scan the new QR code and delete old entries in your authenticator app
Account Recovery Options
If you lose access to both your authenticator device and backup code:
- Account owners: Submit a request through the account recovery form
- Non-account owners: Contact your account owner to remove 2FA from your account
